Chocolate War Essay, Research Paper

Major Character:

The major character in this book is Jerry Renault, a freshman. He refuses to sell chocolate during the annual school sale. When the Vigils, get involved, Jerry?s life gets pretty bad. He gets beaten and abused. His mother died of illness, and following her death, Jerry?s father decides to move to a new apartment.

Jerry decides he should be a part of something, so he goes out for the football team. He proves to be a good and worthy player.

Setting:

This book is set in a small catholic all-boys school in Boston. The main character?s home isn?t described very well.

Plot:

Jerry decides not to participate in the annual chocolate sale. The Vigils, a secret school society in charge of the sale, decide this is a threat to the organization, and Jerry becomes an outcast. He is abused and beaten, but still stays strong.

My Reaction:

This book was well written and made me think of how cruel people can be and how people can be mistreated. The author set a mood, a sad and dark mood that is kept throughout the book. Even scenes that were meant to be funny or cheerful, a sense of darkness filled the page. It does make the book depressing, but I liked it.
