Two Kinds Essay, Research Paper

The protagonist Amy Tan, in the short story “Two Kinds” is a character that evolves and undergoes a lot of phases throughout the story to finally come to a point where she is happy and independent. At the beginning of the story Amy seems to be a happy and obedient little girl that agrees with everything her mom tells her. At this stage Amy does not know exactly what she wants. As Amy grows older and starts to think independently, she realizes that she is not who her mom wants her to be,

she is “simply herself” .At this point Amy changes attitude drasticly. She becomes really stubborn, selfish and stops listening to her mom. During this period of time Amy has a lot of anger in her, she is constantly mad. When her mom gives up on her and her dreams,things start calming down at home. Amy calms down as well and starts thinking straight. She feels guilty and bad about her actions but she has no regrets. After a long sceptical phase, Amy comes to peace with herself, forgives her mom and finds true happiness. She is finally happy about who she is “Amy Tan”.
