The program starts when the student is in 10th grade and is finished in the 12th grade. Half of the school year the students go to Vo-Tech and the other half the students go to regular school. This program can benefit many students, but there is only one drawback. The Vo-Tech students do not have a choice to take academic classes or business classes. The students are put in a section called “The Vo-Tech Class.” Mahanoy Area School District is limiting the student’s options for when they get out of school. For example, just say a student would like to go to the Vocational Technical School but also would want to have academic classes. The student would have to lose out on one of his or her choices because it is not allowed. The Vo-Tech students should have a choice. Some ways you can help the students is to write letters to the Mahanoy City Board of Education and let them know how you feel. If you have an academic student, ask them if they would want to learn a trade. The more we push for the choice is more of a chance for the Vo-Tech students.
