On Friday, likes many others, I was anxiously ready to get out from school and
enjoy the weekend with my friends. I was in the sixth grade at that time, and school
doesn?t seem important to me. It was a special weekend because Halloween was on
Saturday. When school lets out, I was so exuberant that I raced home, so I could eat a
quick snack and meet my friends to plan what we are going to do on Halloween night.
As I ran toward my front door, I could see the inside door was closed. It was peculiar,
because my mom has always left the door open. If she had to go somewhere, she would
have waited until I got home from school. I knew it must have been an emergency. As I
comptemplated where my mother could have ventured at such a time, my neighbor saw
me and addressed to me slowly, ? Your parents have gone to Houston to visit you
grandfather who is in the hospital. Here are the keys to the house, and your mother told
you to stay in the house until you brothers and sisters get home from school.? As I went
toward my neighbor to retrieve the keys, I did not bother to ask them about the status of
my grandfather. I was infuriated with my parents, for ruining my Halloween weekend.
Just as I expected, my sibling and I had to go to Houston the next morning.
As we got to my grandmother?s house, there was nobody to answer the door. As I
sat along the driveway thinking of all the fun I would have with my friends, a familiar
van drove into the driveway. It was my parents. I was enthusiastic thinking my parents
might go home and I could enjoy Halloween with my friends. However, as I stood up
from the edge of the driveway, I gazed upon red-rimmed, tear-filled eyes and disheveled
hair, I knew something tragic had happened. My grandfather passed away on October 31,
1992, at 4:47 p.m.
While my parents endured the pain and all I was thinking about is hanging out
with my friends. What was I thinking? These thoughts appeared during the cold,
blistering day of the funeral. The weather reminded me of the holiday season my family
came to visit him. He would always reminded me to be a good boy to my parents. On the
drive home in the van, I prayed for forgiveness. I learned several valuable lessons during
the ordeal; one of the most important of which was that even though a person has passed
away, he or she will always leave an impression that will stay with you for a lifetime.

fate that burden your life, but help you on your way through life. It makes life more
meaningful. By showing us a new, refreshing, and significant aspect in life that we can
