Demolishing the Constitution
Few Policy debates have been as dominated by emotion as the one on gun control. Perhaps one reason why this issue is so heatedly discussed is because it tampers with our right to bear arms. The calls for gun restrictions or for bans on guns are calls for change in our social and constitutional system.
Those of us who love our freedom and fundamental human right of self-defense need to fully realize that gun control leads to the destruction of the constitution.
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” -U.S. Constitution
Even middle school students could catch the basic understanding of this statement. Gun control is based on the false idea that ordinary American citizens are too ill tempered to have a gun. Only through twisting the constitution is gun control even possible. Many people try to say that the founders of our constitution could not foresee the destruction by such weapons and this is reason enough for establishing gun control. Similarly, many others point to the violence in our society, and blame such violence on the ability to obtain firearms easily. But the scary truth is that more people are killed in car accidents than killed with firearms. Clearly, the restriction of bearing arms is a classic infringement of our constitutional right. If the government continues to chip away at our constitutional rights, what other freedoms will be revoked as a quick fix for society’s ills?
Persuasive evidence shows that civilian gun ownership can be a powerful way to stop crime. According to research, Three-fifths of criminals in federal prisons studied said that a criminal would not attack a potential victim who was known to be armed. Two-fifths have decided not to commit a crime because they thought the victim might have a gun.[1] Criminals in states with higher civilian gun ownership rates worried the most about armed victims.[2] In March 1982 Kennesaw, Georgia, enacted a law requiring house holders to keep a gun at home, house burglaries fell from 65 per year to 26, and 11 the following year.[3] Banning guns to reduce crime makes as much sense as banning alcohol to reduce drunk driving.
By what right of those who make our laws deny people the natural right to defend themselves and bear arms? Every law that says you can’t carry firearms is unconstitutional. There is stated evidence that proves that obtaining a gun can reduce crime. The only thing gun control debate poses is the question on who to trust more, the government or the people.
