Stupids, Nerds, And Smarties Essay, Research Paper
Almost all high school students, smart or stupid, active or non-active, will be divided into one of three categories: Stupids, those that never study and nearly always fail, Nerds, those that study continuously and always have a perfect grade, and Smarties, those that study a lot and always get a good grade. Nearly everyone wishes that they could be as intelligent as a Nerd is, but have as much fun as a Stupid does. In a way, everyone wishes that they were a Smartie, because they are able to have fun on the weekends and still are able to get a good grade on the test the next Monday. Being a Smartie, a student that is a Nerd and a Stupid at the same time, is the best type of student to be.
Stupids are named for being too stupid to even try to do well in school not because they are actually stupid, although some are. Hardly showing up to their classes, they still pass each grade. They never study and never do homework, yet somehow they still manage to make it to graduation. If they weren’t too busy having fun by, playing pranks on Nerds, starting food fights, or doing who knows what while ditching school, than they probably would be able to receive a higher letter grade than “F” on at least one assignment. Even when they are assigned to work in a group, the Stupids still manage to get a failing grade. Don’t they know that if a person in a group pretends to do some work, that the person still gets a passing grade? Why can’t the Stupids figure this out? Maybe they spend too much time in the library cramming for all their college prep classes. Yeah right! A Stupid wouldn’t be caught dead in a library, let alone a prep class. After all, a library is for those who know what a book is, and a Stupid never passed a class, with a high enough grade, to get into a college prep class. Because of their horrible grades, they never get to have fun by participating in extra curricular activities. They can’t join clubs, play sports, or even go on school trips. They don’t choose to participate in activities like fundraisers or class games, and because of this, they never meet a Nerd that, most likely, would do their homework for them.
It’s obvious to see why Stupids are bad students, but what about Nerds? Nerds, the complete opposite of Stupids, know everything. A Nerd is a person that spends time talking to teachers, studying, and reading about everything. They could tell you about World War One, marsupials, fungus, or even how snakes reproduce. Unlike the Stupids, the Nerds always go to class, do theirs and other peoples homework, and always study. For their great efforts, they always receive near perfect grades and graduate with honors. One thing bad about being a Nerd is that they are always studying. Studying is essential when their class schedule is packed full of college prep classes. Nerds are always in the library, not just to study, but for fun. They are also in the library because they know a Stupid can’t play a trick on them if they are in the library. So, what is so bad about Nerds?
A Nerd is too afraid to work in a group. To a Nerd, everyone is stupid. In a group project, the Nerd will do all the work no matter what anyone else says, for if anyone helps, the Nerd believes, he will not receive a perfect grade. Since all time is spent studying, there is no time for extra curricular activities in a Nerds life, unless the school has a chess club. Nerds are only interested in brainy activities, which don’t include sports or fundraisers. If they knew that participating in these activities actually help people later in life, they might be better students like the Smarties.
If it were possible to merge a Stupid with a Nerd, a Smartie would be the outcome. They are named Smarties because they are smart enough to know that receiving less than perfect grades isn’t the end of the world, and that having fun in high school is important. They know a lot about everything, but doesn’t know every little detail about the making of socks for example. They go to class most of the time, and when there is a big test, they study some. Smarties know when to study and when they can get away without studying. They also know what homework assignments are essential to do and which ones are not. They are happy to receive “A’s and B’s” on their report cards.
So, a Smartie is a watered down Nerd? This isn’t true. Working in a group or working alone does not matter to a Smartie. Working in a group will ensure an “A” on a project, and working alone will bring a similar grade. Because Smarties often participate in sports, fundraisers, and other school activities, they receive more scholarships, serve the community better, and lead a more productive life than any Stupid or Nerd. Gaining all the benefits is not the only reason a Smartie participates in extra curricular activities. They participate because they enjoy doing so. After all, someone has to join the teams and clubs; the Nerds are too busy studying and the Stupids are not eligible to participate.
Being able to have fun all the time does sound good, and so does getting perfect grades, but having both is nearly impossible. Besides, both of them have their down sides: either get bad grades and go nowhere in life, or spend endless hours of studying and have no fun ever. A bad student will be the result of the selection of either option, for a Stupid gets bad grades, and a Nerd doesn’t join in on school activities. Luckily, there is a third option that has characteristics from both sides of the world. A Smartie gets good grades while having fun. When traits are combined of two types of bad students a good student is the result. It goes to show that two negatives do equal a positive.
