Romeo and Juliet: The First Balcony Scene
The first balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous scenes ever written. William Shakespeare had in his mind that he wanted the main characters to show their affection in a dramatic-type scene. This scene is the time when they proclaim their love for each other and arrange the plans for their eventual marriage. The first balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet is very important and sets up the building blocks for the famous elope.
In order to get into the Capulet s orchard and attend the party, there were some obstacles that Romeo must first overcome. First of all, they are most undecidedly walls surrounding the entire estate ; therefore, he had to climb them. The front, side and back entrances are all heavily guarded, so the only way would be to climb over the orchard wall. Romeo is very brave for risking his life to see Romeo and Juliet. He truly loves her.
When Romeo accomplishes the feat of climbing over the orchard all, Juliet appears high above him on her balcony. Romeo says things like But soft what light through yonder windows breaks? / It is the east and Juliet is the sun. / Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon. / Who is already sick and pale with grief. (Pg. 69, lines 2-5) Romeo shows Juliet his true feelings to let her know how much he cares about her. It seems that Romeo fell in love with her at first sight.
When Romeo is standing outside of Juliet s balcony, he uses a variety of similes. Here is an example; O speak again bright angel for thou art/ As glorious to this night o er my head. / As is winged messenger from heaven. (Pg. 71 lines 29-31). In other words, Romeo is trying to say that Juliet is like an angel from heaven. Romeo thinks that she has lit up the sky with her beauty, and he thinks that she bring him important news. He listens to both words she says, and treasures them.
Romeo also uses quite an array of metaphors during the same balcony scene. Here is another example; See how she leans her cheek upon her hand. / O, that I were a glove upon that hand, / That I might touch that cheek! (Pg. 71 24-26) In this dramatical scene, Romeo is comparing himself to the glove on Juliet s hand. He wishes he could be that glove and touch her cheek.
During scene two, Romeo and Juliet make plans to get married. Juliet says that she will send a messenger before 9 clock the next morning to finalize the plans of where to meet and when the wedding will be. Juliet would then make up a lie to get out of the house and marry Romeo. It seems odd to be in love with the only people you re supposed to hate. They seem driven for each other.
Romeo and Juliet seem like the perfect couple. They are willing to do almost anything for each other, even sneak between feuding families to show their love for each other! It is only hope that the two families will stop feuding and become allies for the sake of Romeo and Juliet s marriage.
