Compare and Contrast While the Glass Menagery and Our Town are different in many ways; theyare also the same in some ways. The plot is the same in the two plays in that there is always one person trying toget out of town. Also in both plays someone is unhappy with what they are doing. Inboth plays this person is the person who supports the family. In the Glass Menagery itis Tom who is unhappy and wants to get out of town. The similar character in OurTown is Joe .There is one person in each play who is trying to get them to stay in townand that peron is very annoying. In both plays this character is the mother. There are other similarities between the plays including that in the GlassMenagery the daughter has no friends and is going nowhere in life. It is the same withthe younger son in Our Town . Also, the Mothers in the plays are similar in that theyboth spend lots of time trying to get someone married. The difference in setting is huge. The Glass Menagery is set in the city and in

an apartment. The walls are all water stained and dirty. If you look out the window, thereis a building right there. To separate the living room from the eating room there is just acurtain. The setting in Glass Menagery is very depressing. They are not wealthy in the Glass Menagery . The mom gets drunk alot if something bad happens. Our Town is set out in the country in a two story house with clean walls. Ifyou look out the window you can see a dirt road and the stone house next store. Theyhave doors to separate the rooms. The setting in Our Town is very pleasant. In OurTown they are middle class and get by just fine without any worries. There are manypeople in Our Town that know how to handle life instead of getting drunk. The biggest difference is the messages in the plays. In Glass Menagery thatTennessee Williams gives you that life can be sad and depressing. So don t just get upand leave because you might not ever see the people you love again. In our Town themessage is that lie can be great and fun.
