Carlo Ginzburg Essay, Research Paper

The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University Presents The Italian Academy Lecture Series by Carlo Ginzburg A true interdisciplinary intellectual, Ginzburg is among the founders of “microhistory”: an historical approach attempting to explain ideas, attitudes, or cultural patterns by an intensive examination of a person, event, or locality. In 1976, Ginzburg published “The Cheese and the Worms,” a rigorous and imaginative tour-de-force which placed him in the top rank of European historians. In this book, Ginzburg showed that a single miller, if scrutinized carefully enough, could lead to a deeper understanding of the contemporary social and cultural climate. Besides this book, he has published a series of highly acclaimed works, notably, “The Night Battles” (1966), “The Enigma of Piero” (1981), “Clues, Myths, and the Historical Method” (1984), “Ecstasies: Deciphering the Witches? Sabbath” (1989), and most recently “Occhiacci di legno: nove riflessioni sulla distanza”(1997). Carlo Ginzburg was profiled in the Sunday New York Times Magazine in 1991 in which he was referred to as a pioneering practitioner in the history of popular culture. For many years he taught at the University of Bologna, the city where he lives for half of the year. He has been a visiting fellow at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the Getty Center, the Warburg Institute (London), the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris) and since 1988 has held the Franklin D. Murphy Chair of Italian Renaissance Studies at UCLA. His work has been translated into fifteen languages and he has lectured worldwide. This year, Carlo Ginzburg is the Fellow-in-Residence at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University. He will be giving four lectures titled: No Island is an Island: Four Glances at English Literature in a World Perspective All lectures begin at 5:30 PM EST and will be hosted at The Italian Academy. Seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The lectures will also be broadcast live over the internet and recorded as part of our archives for permanent public access Tuesday February 24, 1998 The Old World and the New, Seen from Nowhere Tuesday March 3, 1998 England, Europe and the Defense of Rhyme Tuesday March 10, 1998 A Search for the Origins: Reading Tristram Shandy Again Tuesday March 24, 1998 Tusitala and His Polish Reader [Main Page] [Calendar] [Ginzburg at UCLA] The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University Presents The Italian Academy Lecture Series by Carlo Ginzburg A true interdisciplinary intellectual, Ginzburg is among the founders of “microhistory”: an historical approach attempting to explain ideas, attitudes, or cultural patterns by an intensive examination of a person, event, or locality.
