Polykleitos? Bearer And Laocoon And His Sons Essay, Research Paper

Polykleitos’ Bearer and Laocoon and His Sons

Polykleitos’ is a Roman statue. It is made out of marble and it is 6 feet 6 inches tall. The statue is of a male who looks to be athletic someone who works out. The statue is standing in a contrapuntal position; it has its left leg slightly bent witch causes his foot not to be flat on the platform under him. That position helps the statue stay balance. It is not rigid. The statue has no facial expression. It is serious. It eyes are deep and expressionless. The statue’s head is facing to the left. His right arm is bent half way and his hands are balled up into a fist his hips are leaning towards the left side to help give him balance. His left arm is straight down by his side. It appears that the Spear Bearer is going to get ready to start walking at any moment. Looking at the statue is like looking at a black and white photograph it has no color.

Both Laocoon and His Sons and Polykleitos are Roman sculptures and both are made of the same material. The sculpture is 8 feet tall. Laocoon’s and His Sons have more color. This sculpture has a golden color to it. Both of these sculptures are depicting the human body. Both sculptures are depicting the male body as muscular and athletic looking. Both of these were done in the high classical period witch lasted from 400 – 450 B.C.E. With both of these sculptures the surface appears to be smooth excluding the muscles that have curves. The contrast in the Laocoon’s and his Sons is light. You do see the shadows of Laocoon’s and his sons and those who are trying to kill them. With Polykleitos you see Shadow of his facial features and the shadow of his legs on the platform he has under. Polykleitos has dullness to it and Laocoon has a more lively color. Where as the posture of Polykleitos seams somewhat strange as if he was caught in mid motion Laocoon’s position is more action like. He is flexing moving around to get a way from his enemies. Both of these sculptures are copies.

Menkaure and His Wife and Kosho’s Kuya Preaching

This statue is of both male and female. The statue is made out of marble. The statue is 54 ? tall. They are both standing on a platform. The king’s left leg is extended forward. His arms are straight on either side of him. His fists are clenched and it appears as if he is holding and objects in them. He appears to be alert it is as if he is expecting some news. Everything depicted in these statues appears human like. There is an exception to this and that is his shins. His shin is very exaggerated. It is very elongated. The tip of his shins is square like. It sort of reminds me of an elephant’s trunk. As far as clothing goes he seams to be wearing a cloth that is tied on his head. This makes his head appear almost square like. Due to the cloth he has on his head it makes it seam as if he has long hair.

Queen Khamerembty II, which is his wife, is standing in a more naturalistic position. She is not as rigid as he is. She seams more relaxed. Her right is somewhere behind his back and her left arm is bend at her elbow and she is holding his Mankaure’s left arm. She has on a blouse and a long skirt almost up to her ankles. The clothing that she is wearing is tight fitting to the body. The shapes of her body especially the genital area and the stomach is very well outlined so that you are able to distinguish their shapes and sizes.

In contrast Kuya preaching is made out of wood and it is a single male. It is 46 inches tall. He has no hair on his head if you just concentrate on his face it look as if he is deep in thought or meditating. His face also shows the sign of aging. He has six little Buddha’s coming out of his mouth. On the left hand he has a walking stick. One of his knees is straight. If you look at his cloths they are not straight on his body. He is standing in a contrapuntal position. His legs are spread apart. This man was a munk and practiced pure land Buddhism. He encouraged his people to chant as they traveled through the countryside. Kosho was a master in his unique style. Both of these sculptures are different Kosho is more naturalistic more like the human body. Mankaura’s face did not look very natural because of the elongated shin. Kosho was made out of wood and more religious like. Mankaure was royalty and his clothing was different. They both have that dull gray color to them. Both of these statues have platform to balance them both out Kosho seams to be and older man.

Imperial Procession and Crucifixion

The imperial procession is a detailed relief of the Pacis. The height of this artwork is 5.2 inches (16 m) this appears to be carving on a wall that is composed of women, children and men. The man with the surround head Marcos Agrippa. Who might be Augustus successor if he had not died in 12 C.E. this was right after the Pacis was dedicated. This was an inspiration representation and tradition of individuals. This was their way of recording their history. This contributed to Roman imperial propaganda

The Crucifixion is a painting not a carving like the Imperial Procession. This painting has multi colors unlike the carving. The background of this panting is a Golden brown color. This is a panting that represents pain, suffering and sacrifice. You can see Mary and John in the background with their faces full of grief. All of the characters in the painting have a halo around their heads. Christ hair is a dark shade of brown. His hair is past his shoulders. His hair looks a bit disheveled not very much out of place. He has a beard on his face that is thick. He has a bit of emotion sadness but not as much as Mary and Paul. His arms are spread out to his sides and on each hand he has a nail. He has a muscle that is sticking out from his neck to the middle of his chest area it appears to be a bit exaggerated. The muscles in his chest are dome shaped or arc like. Usually your muscles go across your chest and stomach area they are not that type of shape the muscles are in a row. It is in a shape like a rainbow, or horseshoe and it looks unnatural. The lines the artist used to draw this is thin and it is almost the color of his skin. He is wearing clothing that is wrapped around his waste. His left leg looks like it is thicker then the right. Both keens look exaggerated. Both of his feet are planted on the piece of wood by nails. His feet are slightly pointed downward with one nail in each foot and some blood is dripping from his foot. To the right of him he has Mary standing there. Mary’s hands are positioned as if she is making a bird. I interpret this a sign of freedom from all harm. It might mean something different. She is wearing a long green gown with golden trimming. John’s eyes are directed to the left of him. He has his left palm straight up. John has a green shirt on and the middle part appears to be a gown bronze color. On the bottom of this painting there are some bushes and in the middle there is a skull. It appears that some one dug a whole and there is also a pile of dirt located on the ground. Unlike imperial procession this painting has a little bit more feeling. I believe that people can relate more to it and it is more religious.

Head of King from Ife and Woman from Willendorf

Her head is made of brass. The height is 11 7/10. it was discovered in 1910 In place of her hair she has whole where her hair should have been. Her entire face has lines that you can feel. The areas around and under the eyes have a bit of an orange color to them. Her noise is a bit long but it is not really point like, it does not have a sharp end. She has full lips that are the color of her skin. Her ears are long and big but they do not stick out. Her neck has a whole in the left side of it and it has traces of orange. Her neck seams as if it had been put together in pieces. It looks like it was once divided into six separate pieces.

Woman of Willendorf was all called Venus of Wellendrof (30,000 to 25,000 B.C. The sculpture is made out of limestone and its height is 4 3/8 (11 m) the statue was found by archeologist and it is an important symbol of prehistoric art. When the statue was first discovered it had no head. The head was discovered later on and archeologists were surprised to see that the head fit on the body exactly. The statue was thought be Venus or a Goddess used as symbol for fertility. The statue is a female it has very exaggerated features. Every part of the sculptures body is disproportionate and big. You cannot really see any facial features on this woman. Her connects right into her chest area. She has no neck. Her stomach is incredibly huge and her belly button looks as if it had been stretch. Her legs are fat and pudgy. This is a very unnatural sculpture. The only part that resembles the human body is the chest area. She has no arms. Unlike Head of a King from Ife this sculpture does not in anyway shape or form resemble any part of the human body. The head of a king has human like characteristics, which means more distinct features that are identifiable right away to the human eye. The color and size of Head of a king are more lively and proportionate. The Head of a king is younger and the material used is smothering as well.

Each of this sculptures and paintings have there own unique style. This is what makes them so interesting to observe. Their diverse backgrounds say a lot about the cultures and artists who created these unique irreplaceable creations of art.
