Black Boy Paper
When put into a foreign environment animal s adept, so do humans when they need to learn they ways of life. Richard Wright, due to his surroundings, had to adapt and become independent early in his life. In the book, Black Boy, Richard shows how he progressively became independent in his writings. He never had a real relationship with anyone, so he never knew what it was like to rely on anyone else. Richard being an African-American in the south at that time was very hard. No one was willing to help him; he had to learn for himself. His family wasn t much of a help to him, being that they wanted nothing to do with him.
Being an outcast most of his life from society caused him to become a self-reliant person. It is necessary to understand that Richard seemed not to want a social life. He just wanted to be left to himself staying free from things that could hurt him. He didn t know what it was like to be loved, because his family didn t love him. For example, this quote, I mingle with the boys, hoping to pass unnoticed (pg. 123). Richard is saying here that he will talk with them just so he doesn t seem weird, but he really doesn t want to be there. He would wish that no one was there. If Richard was able to actually have a true friendship he would have never became the person he did, an independent one. One of the causes as to why he couldn t get a real friend was because he never stayed in one place at one time to get one. For instance, this quote, …with the exception of one year at the church school, each time I had begun a new school term something would happen to disrupt it. (pg. 123). This quote shows how Richard was moving around so much that he never could get a friend, supporting my idea that this is why he became independent. He didn t have time for anyone . That he couldn t be held back by anyone or anything.
