NOTE: You will be prompted to reboot the computer after uninstalling the AOL Adapter. After the initial reboot, when AOL is launched, you will be prompted to reboot again. On some systems this may happen several times.
NOTE: The Uninstall AOL Adapter button manually removes the files that make up the AOL Adapter.
2. SET WINDOWS TO SHOW ALL FILES WHEN SYSINFO IS NOT PRESENT
a. Click on START, select PROGRAMS, then click on WINDOWS EXPLORER.
b. Click on the VIEW menu, then select OPTIONS or FOLDER OPTIONS.
c. Click on the VIEW tab.
d. Under Hidden Files, verify Show all files is selected, then click on OK.
3. MANUALLY DELETE THE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES WHEN SYSINFO IS NOT PRESENT
a. On your Windows Desktop, double-click on MY COMPUTER.
b. Double-click on the (C:) drive.
c. Double-click on the WINDOWS folder.
d. Double-click on the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder.
e. Click on EDIT from the menu bar, then choose SELECT ALL.
f. Click on FILE from the menu bar, then select DELETE.
g. Click on YES when prompted to delete the selected Cookies or to send these files to the Recycle Bin.
NOTE: In Windows 95, you will be asked to confirm the removal of each cookie file found. Hold down the letter Y key to delete each file without clicking Yes for each one.
g. Click on the X in the upper right corner to close the Temporary Internet Files folder.
4. MANUALLY REMOVE THE FILES THAT MAKE UP THE AOL ADAPTER AND REBOOT WHEN SYSINFO IS NOT PRESENT
NOTE: If you do not set Windows to display all hidden files, you may not be able to locate the NETAOL.INF file since it is located in a hidden directory.
a. Click on START, select FIND, then click on FILES OR FOLDERS.
NOTE: In Windows 2000/Me, click on Start, select Search, then click on For Files and Folders.
b. Click on BROWSE.
c. Double-click on (C:).
d. Double-click on the WINDOWS, WIN95, or WIN98 folder, depending upon which directory Windows is installed to.
e. Click on OK.
f. In the Named box, type
NETAOL.INF, AOLMAC.VXD, AOLNDI.DLL
NOTE: These are the three files which make up the AOL Adapter.
then click on FIND NOW.
g. Click on the EDIT menu item at the top of the Find window, then choose SELECT ALL.
h. Click on FILE from the menu bar, then select DELETE.
i. Click on YES when prompted to send these files to the Recycle Bin.
j. Click on START, then select SHUT DOWN.
k. Select Restart, then click on YES or OK.
NOTE: Once the computer is restarted, launch America Online v6.0. This will cause the AOL Adapter files to be rebuilt.
l. When the message In order to complete the installation of AOL software, please restart your computer now. appears, click on RESTART NOW.
5. RECREATE THE NETWORK ADAPTER WITHOUT THE WINDOWS INSTALLATION CD
a. In the Copying Files window, type the Path to the America Online Net folder for your version of Windows. The path varies according to the version of Windows as follows:
Windows 95
C:\America Online 6.0\NET\OSR1
Windows 95b (OEM pre-installed version)
C:\America Online 6.0\NET\OSR2
Windows 98
C:\America Online 6.0\NET\WIN98
b. Click on OK.
c. Click on YES when prompted to restart your computer.
NOTE: If you installed America Online somewhere other than the (C:) drive or the America Online 6.0 folder, you will need to adjust the path above accordingly.
6. CHECK TO SEE IF THE AOL ADAPTER REBUILT ITSELF
a. Click on START, select SETTINGS, then click on CONTROL PANEL.
b. Double-click on the NETWORK icon.
c. Verify that the AOL Adapter is listed in the Network Control Panel, then click on OK.
7. RESTART AOL
Click on START, select PROGRAMS, select AMERICA ONLINE, then click on AMERICA ONLINE 6.0
NOTE: If the AOL Adapter is not listed, the Windows Network Control Panel may be damaged. For assistance with this issue, you will need to contact your computer manufacturer or Microsoft (contacting Microsoft is not a free call).
