Situation:
it is situated at the confluence of the rivers Wye, Monnow and Trothy. In the
county of Monmouthshire, Gwent South West Wales.Site:
originally used by the Romans it was later chosen for its defensive
capabilities by the Normans soon after the invasion of 1066. A castle was built
in the centre of the town, but has long since fallen into ruin. It is believed
that Henry V was born there. Function: firstly used
by the Romans and then by the Normans as a religious, military and commercial
settlement. In later years it has developed as an important trade an
administrative centre. It eventually became the County town of Monmouthshire.
It is now the centre of tourism for the Wye Valley. ?The ruined tower to the right of the picture
is all that is left of the castle.It
has an estimated population of 7,500.
